Use Several Colors

I began the nose of this orange tabby with a wash of Jasmine followed by washes of Blush Pink and Pumpkin Orange. I then used Tuscan Red to darken inside the nostrils and the bottom of the nose. I finally added a wash of Raspberry and layered Dark Umber inside the nostrils and on the bottom edge of the nose.

Bird Beak

The beak variations among the differing bird species is notable, but overall beaks are relatively easy to render. This mini-demo will help you identify some of the methods of rendering two of the most common aspects of avian beaks.

The macaw beak in this demo has differing areas of coloration and texture, and you will learn how to render these characteristics in four easy steps. The upper part of the beak is smooth and glossy and the lower part is dark and cracked. You can easily apply this knowledge to other species with similar characteristics.
